About the composer:
Akumadugula ManamboocavaDi VenkaTasubbaiyyar - A composer of the 19th century, he was the cousin and a direct disciple of Tyagaraja and came from Manambuchavadi (Maharnombuchavadi), Tanjavur district, Tamilnadu. An accomplished singer, he was also a teacher of repute and had the special distinction of having trained the Pancharatnas, the five gems, namely Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer, Patnam Subramanya Iyer, Sarabha Sastri, Tyagaraja (the grandson of the great composer Tyagaraja) and Fiddle Venkoba Rao. Each of these disciples eventually became a name to reckon with in their own times. His songs were mainly devotional and in Telugu. Jalajaksha (Hamsadhwani Varnam) is one of his popular compositions. His other disciples include violin vidwan Thiruvaiyaru Krishna Iyer, Sarabha Sastri, Tanjavur Venkat Rao (1817-1900, creator of the first 72-mela ragamalika, in Marathi), and Susala Dakshinamurthy Shastri. It is said that he took varnamettu-s without words left behind by Tyagaraja and fitted his own words to some of them - two examples being Parabrahmamu and Ararakaga. Many of the kriti-s bearing the 'Venkatesa' mudra are probably his. DhanyuDevvaDO is sometimes mistakenly considered his composition - it is actually by his student, Patnam Subramanya Iyer. Mudra: Venkatesa.
