MEL - STHAYI VARISAI
Mel-Sthayi Varisai literally means "Higher Octave” . Mel-Sthayi Varisai is also known as Taara Sthayi Varisai or Hechu Sthayi Varisai. Mel-Sthayi Varisai exercises help students to achieve the goal of training the vocal chords or playing the instruments on the higher frequency swaras.
Over all there are five exercises in this lesson and in each of the exercise, one new note of the higher frequency is added to help the student sing or play the ranges from high to higher and eventually into the highest note possible.
When singing the Mel-Sthayi Varisai, it is recommended not to shout out loud or strain the vocal chords to reach the higher note. Especially for the singing students its better to practice what ever highest note one can reach and stay on it for sometimes in the beginning and gradually go to the next exercise when the voice has the flexibility to go the the next higher note. When the vocal chords are not ready to take over the next note of the octave its definitely not recommended to push the voice to reach high as it may create other practical difficulties. With gradual increase of practice and time one will sure achieve singing all of the exercises in no time.
It is also advised to practice these exercises to be sung in three or four speeds. Once students are comfortable in singing all of the five exercises comfortably with confidence, they must try the same in akaaram, (Eliminate to sing the Solfa syllables or ‘Sargams’ but the vowel AAAA only). This vocal training later helps students to move over to the high frequency notes effortlessly.
